TLDR Low free thyroxine (FT4) is common in young lupus patients and needs quick diagnosis and treatment.
This case study highlights the increased prevalence of thyroid dysfunction, specifically low free thyroxine (FT4), in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, as demonstrated by a 15-year-old girl with SLE who developed euthyroid sick syndrome. The study emphasizes that lupus nephritis, elevated creatinine levels, the presence of Smith (Sm) antigen, and critical conditions heighten the risk of low FT4 in these patients. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient deteriorated and passed away, underscoring the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment to potentially improve prognosis in similar cases.
