TLDR Loestrin effectively normalizes testosterone levels and improves PCOS symptoms with minimal side effects.
The study investigated the effects of a low estrogen-containing oral contraceptive, Loestrin, on 25 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Loestrin effectively normalized elevated luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels, both total and unbound, while increasing testosterone binding globulin levels. Unbound testosterone levels began to decline within a week of treatment and normalized by 12 to 16 weeks. Participants also experienced reduced hair growth and improved complexion within this timeframe. The treatment was associated with minimal side effects, suggesting it was a viable option for managing PCOS symptoms with fewer adverse effects compared to high estrogen oral contraceptives.
