TLDR Longer TA repeats in the SRD5A2 gene may increase acne risk in Chinese people.
The study investigated the association between SRD5A2 gene polymorphisms and acne risk in the Chinese population. It focused on two polymorphisms: V89L and TA repeat polymorphisms [(TA)n]. The study included 49 Chinese acne patients who responded well to the SRD5A2 inhibitor-finasteride and had normal serum testosterone levels, and 50 healthy controls without acne. The results showed no significant difference in the V89L polymorphism between the two groups. However, individuals with a longer (n ≥ 6) allele of the (TA)n repeat polymorphism were found to have a higher risk of acne (Odds Ratio = 3.52, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.73-7.16) compared to those with a shorter allele (n < 6). This suggests that the (TA)n repeat polymorphism in the SRD5A2 gene may be associated with an increased risk of acne in the Chinese population. The study calls for further research with larger sample sizes to confirm these findings and explore potential interactions with environmental factors.
