TLDR Finasteride reduces prostate size and symptoms with few side effects.
The document reviewed the long-term use of finasteride, a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride was found to significantly reduce dihydrotestosterone production, leading to decreased prostate size and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. Although the reduction in BPH symptoms was modest compared to surgical interventions, finasteride therapy resulted in fewer surgeries and a lower incidence of acute urinary retention. The treatment was associated with minimal adverse effects, but further research was suggested to enhance its effectiveness for BPH management.
