Acquired Localized Trichorrhexis Nodosa Secondary to Cultural Practices

A 15-year-old female developed acquired localized trichorrhexis nodosa (TN) due to the cultural practice of applying and vigorously rubbing a herbal powder, "Rasnadi Choornam," on her scalp. This practice, believed to have medicinal benefits, led to brittle and broken hair with whitish-grey nodes, resulting in hair loss on the central scalp. Examination showed no signs of inflammation, ruling out allergic reactions. The condition was diagnosed as TN, a hair shaft disorder that can be congenital or acquired, often due to physical damage from practices like vigorous rubbing. The patient was advised to stop using the powder and avoid rough handling of her hair. This case highlights TN caused by local cultural habits, which has not been previously reported.
