Ceramic Flat Irons: Improper Use Leading to Acquired Trichorrhexis Nodosa

    Paradi Mirmirani
TLDR Improper use of ceramic flat irons can cause severe hair damage.
Improper use of ceramic flat irons led to acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, causing hair to become fragile and break easily. Despite being marketed as safer, these flat irons could still cause significant damage, especially at high temperatures or on chemically treated hair. Different hair types had varying heat tolerances, complicating the definition of "improper use." Proper use involved applying the flat iron to dry hair, using heat protectants, and limiting the temperature to no higher than 175°C. Dermatologists were advised to inquire about flat iron use when assessing hair damage. Full recovery from the damage could take 2 or more years.
