TLDR Changing hair's surface and structure can help protect its natural oils from being washed away.
This study explored how surfactants caused lipid loss in human hair, identifying two pathways based on lipid hydrophobicity. Highly hydrophobic lipids, such as squalene and wax esters, were mainly lost through surfactant penetration, while less hydrophobic lipids, like fatty acids and cholesterol, were removed via a roll-up mechanism. The findings showed that modifying the hair's surface and internal structure could protect lipids from being lost due to surfactants, offering insights into preserving the health of hair and skin.
