A Multidisciplinary Lifestyle Intervention for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: The Role of a Pulse-Based Diet and Aerobic Exercise on Reproductive, Cardio-Metabolic, and Quality of Life Outcomes

    Maryam Kazemi
TLDR A pulse-based diet with exercise improved PCOS health more than another diet, but benefits didn't last long-term.
The study investigated the effects of a pulse-based diet versus the TLC diet, combined with aerobic exercise, on women with PCOS. Involving 95 women, the 16-week intervention showed that both diets improved PCOS-specific health outcomes, but the pulse-based diet was more effective in reducing insulin response and improving cardiometabolic risk factors. Despite initial improvements, many health benefits were not sustained long-term. The study highlighted the need for further research to encourage long-term adherence to healthy lifestyle changes in women with PCOS.

High sugar diets may worsen hair loss by increasing 5α-reductase activity and androgen levels, especially in women with PCOS. A low sugar diet might reduce scalp DHT levels, similar to finasteride, but genetics also significantly influence hair loss.

A 29-year-old woman is experiencing gradual hair thinning since age 15, suspects Androgenic Alopecia, and has tried 5% minoxidil with little success. She has purchased various hair loss treatments including minoxidil, dutasteride, finasteride, and spironolactone, but is cautious about starting them due to potential interactions with her ADHD medication.
