TLDR Kerion is a severe scalp infection that needs quick treatment to avoid permanent hair loss in children.
In 2019, a case report discussed Kerion, a severe form of tinea capitis, a common dermatophytic infection of the scalp in children. The most frequent pathogens were identified as Trichophyton torsurans and Microsporum canis. Kerion typically arises due to an advanced infection and an exaggerated host response, leading to widespread inflammation, often with pustule and abscess formation. If the infection is prolonged, it can result in permanent alopecia. The report emphasized the importance of differential diagnosis and adequate treatment, particularly in children.
