TLDR Traditional Chinese Medicine, combined with antiandrogen therapy, could improve treatment and reduce side effects for genetic hair loss.
The 2016 study "Progress of Integrated Medicine in the Treatment of Androgenic Alopecia" discussed the role of androgen signaling pathways in the pathogenesis of Androgenic Alopecia (AGA), a common genetic hair loss disease. The study highlighted the effectiveness of antiandrogen therapy, but also noted its limitations due to adverse reactions like sexual dysfunction. The authors suggested that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), guided by the theory of "syndrome differentiation", could offer unique benefits in enhancing the efficacy of treatment, consolidating curative effects, and reducing side effects. The paper aimed to introduce new perspectives from both TCM and western medicine for clinical diagnosis and treatment of AGA.
