TLDR Myo-inositol may be more effective than metformin for inducing ovulation in women with PCOS.
In a study involving 120 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), researchers found that both metformin and myo-inositol (MYO) are effective first-line treatments for inducing ovulation, with MYO potentially being more effective. Participants were divided into two groups, with 60 women receiving metformin (1500 mg/day) and 60 receiving MYO plus folic acid (4 g/day and 400 µg/day) over a 6-month period. If pregnancy did not occur, recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (r-FSH) was added. The study reported that 50% of the metformin group and 65% of the MYO group restored spontaneous ovulation, and the total pregnancy rates were 36.6% for the metformin group and 48.4% for the MYO group. The study suggests that MYO may be more effective due to its role in the insulin signaling pathway and its association with oocyte maturity.
