TLDR Bimatoprost is safe but not effective for severe eyelash loss from alopecia areata, possibly helping those with less loss.
In a 16-week study from 2009, the effectiveness of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution for eyelash growth in patients with alopecia areata was evaluated. Out of 11 subjects who started the study, only 7 completed it. The treatment was generally well tolerated, but it did not lead to significant eyelash growth in patients with 95% to 100% eyelash loss. However, two patients with 30% and 40% of their eyelashes remaining at the start did experience some growth. The study concluded that bimatoprost is safe but not effective for those with extensive eyelash loss due to alopecia areata, though it may be beneficial for those with less extensive loss. Further research is needed to confirm its efficacy in such cases.
