TLDR Indole-based compounds improved ovarian health in rats with PCOS, with L-Tryptophan and Tryptophol being most effective.
In the 2017 study, 42 adult female rats with induced polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were treated with indole-based compounds for 8 weeks. The compounds included 5-hydroxy indole-2-carboxylic acid, N-acetyl-tryptophan, Tryptamine, L-Tryptophan, and Tryptophol. Results showed an increase in primary follicles, corpus luteum, growing follicles, and graafian follicles, and a decrease in the number and diameter of ovarian cysts in all treated rats compared to the untreated group. L-Tryptophan and Tryptophol were the most effective, suggesting their efficacy may be due to interactions with melatonin receptors, antioxidant properties, and pharmacokinetics.
