TLDR Silymarin and metformin together most improved hormone levels and ovulation in women with PCOS.
The study conducted 6 years ago investigated the effect of silymarin, an antioxidant and insulin sensitizer, on 60 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The participants were divided into three groups: one received silymarin (750mg/day), the second received metformin (1500mg/day), and the third received a combination of both. After a 3-month treatment, all groups showed significant improvement in glucose, insulin, testosterone, leutinizing hormone (LH), and progesterone levels, as well as ovulation rate and insulin resistance. The progesterone levels increased by 12.12%, 15.9%, and 17.51% in groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively, and the number of patients who ovulated were 4, 5, and 10 in the respective groups. The study concluded that the combination of silymarin and metformin had the most beneficial effect on hormone regulation and ovulation rate in PCOS patients.
