TLDR Finasteride and dutasteride do not significantly change beard thickness in men.
This retrospective study involving 453 male patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) assessed the impact of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs), specifically finasteride and dutasteride, on beard thickness. Patients, with a mean age of 24.6 years, were treated with either finasteride 1 mg daily (100 patients) or dutasteride 0.5 mg daily (353 patients) for at least 12 months. Results showed that 96.9% of patients experienced no change in beard thickness, 1.1% had a decrease, and 1.9% had an increase. The study concludes that 5ARIs do not significantly affect beard thickness in men with established beards.
