TLDR A Shih Tzu with hypothyroidism improved significantly after 6 weeks of levothyroxine treatment.
A 4-year-old neutered female Shih Tzu was diagnosed with primary hypothyroidism, presenting symptoms such as weight gain, lethargy, bilateral symmetrical alopecia, and cold intolerance. Physical examination showed a dull coat, seborrhoeic dermatitis, bradycardia, and mild obesity. Blood tests revealed mild hypercholesterolaemia, low total and free T4 levels, and elevated TSH. Treatment with oral levothyroxine sodium at 20 µg/kg twice daily led to significant clinical improvement within 6 weeks.
