TLDR Early diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism in dogs is crucial to prevent serious complications.
This study examined 212 dogs and found a 14% incidence of clinical hypothyroidism, with Golden Retrievers and middle-aged dogs being most affected. Common symptoms included alopecia, weight gain, and lethargy, while severe cases showed complications like myxedema and cardiovascular issues. Treatment with levothyroxine improved symptoms and promoted hair regrowth within 6 to 8 months. The study emphasizes the need for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, recommending routine monitoring of thyroid levels in dogs with skin issues or obesity and suggesting further research on long-term complications in a larger sample.
