TLDR Canine hypothyroidism often causes skin issues like hair loss.
Canine hypothyroidism was the most common endocrine disease in dogs, often presenting with dermatological symptoms such as non-pruritic bilaterally symmetrical alopecia. This condition resulted from structural or functional abnormalities in the thyroid gland, leading to insufficient production of thyroid hormones, which were crucial for maintaining skin health. Diagnosis relied on clinical signs, historical findings, and laboratory tests measuring thyroid hormones like TT4, TT3, and fT4. Skin biopsies could show specific histopathological signs indicative of hypothyroidism. Recognizing these symptoms and diagnostic markers was essential for veterinarians when considering hypothyroidism in cases of chronic dermatological disorders.
