TLDR Atrazine causes birth defects in rats, and finasteride can reliably create a hypospadias model.
The study aimed to establish a reproducible animal model of hypospadias and assess the teratogenic effects of Atrazine. It involved 120 pregnant SD rats divided into six groups, including control, finasteride, and Atrazine groups. Hypospadias was observed in male offspring of rats treated with finasteride (10 mg/kg/d, 20 mg/kg/d) and high-dose Atrazine (200 mg/kg/d), with incidences of 28.30%, 67.03%, and 10.23%, respectively. Atrazine showed teratogenic effects, with embryotoxicity noted at 25 mg/kg/d without severe maternal toxicity. The study concluded that a hypospadias model could be reliably established using finasteride, and Atrazine was teratogenic to SD rats.
