TLDR High levels of male hormones in women with PCOS can lead to fertility issues and symptoms like irregular periods, hair growth, acne, and hair loss; lifestyle changes are recommended for management.
The literature review discusses the impacts of hyperandrogenism in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The review was based on 11 studies selected from 370 articles found in the Scielo and Pubmed databases. The study found that clinical manifestations of PCOS, such as ovulatory disorders, infertility, hirsutism, acne, and androgenic alopecia, are pathophysiological impacts of androgenism. Hyperinsulinemia, a condition present in women diagnosed with PCOS, contributes to androgen-dependent anovulation. Irregular menstrual cycles are indicative of anovulation, which is considered favorable for infertility associated with PCOS. The review concludes that due to the significant influence of the patient's physical conditions, therapies aimed at lifestyle changes are the first management of such a situation.
