TLDR Hydroxytyrosol from olive oil helps protect hair cells from damage and could prevent hair loss.
In 2019, a study was conducted to explore the potential protective actions of Hydroxytyrosol (HT), a primary phenolic antioxidant in olive oil, against oxidative stress in rat dermal papilla cells. The study found that HT significantly reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species level, apoptotic markers, and inflammation induced by oxidative stress, and enhanced cell survival by regulating autophagy. Additionally, HT enhanced the secretion of hair growth factors in the anti-inflammation process. These results suggested that HT has a significant protective ability against oxidative stress and could potentially be used to prevent alopecia.
