TLDR Glucocorticoids and thyroid hormones together are essential for fetal fat development.
The study investigated the effects of thyroid hormones and glucocorticoids on adipose tissue traits in hypophysectomized fetal pigs. It was found that treatment with thyroxine (T4) and hydrocortisone (HC), especially in combination, increased serum hormone levels, enhanced skin and hair development, and promoted fat cell growth and lipid accumulation. The combination treatment notably increased fat cell number with only a modest increase in cell size. While T4 alone did not affect capillary cytodifferentiation, HC and T4 + HC partially normalized this aspect. The expression of CCAAT enhancing binding protein (C/EBP) isoforms was not influenced by the treatments, although C/EBPdelta expression was lower in control pigs. The study concluded that the concurrent action of glucocorticoids and thyroid hormones was crucial for fetal adipogenesis regulation.
