TLDR The model successfully grew and differentiated hair follicle cells in the lab.
The study developed an in vitro model to examine human follicular keratinocytes by cultivating anagen-phase hair follicles from healthy individuals on collagen-coated coverslips in a CO2-incubator. Over 6 weeks, light and electron microscopy revealed selective cell growth and keratinocyte differentiation, forming multilayered cultures with developed desmosomes. Three differentiation patterns led to an incomplete horny layer, with ultrastructural features indicating the cells' follicular origin, likely from the outer root sheath. This model was considered promising for further research on hair biological processes and growth.
