TLDR Middle-aged men with unusual hot flashes should be checked for pituitary tumors.
This case study described a 59-year-old man experiencing hot flashes, sweating, and flushing, who was diagnosed with a pituitary macroadenoma causing secondary hypogonadism. Despite the rarity of such symptoms in men with hypogonadism due to pituitary tumors, the patient's condition was identified through these vasomotor symptoms. Laboratory tests showed elevated prolactin and low LH levels, and an MRI revealed a pituitary mass. After undergoing endoscopic transsphenoidal resection of the tumor, identified as a null cell adenoma, the patient's symptoms improved but did not fully resolve. The study highlighted the need to consider a wide range of causes for hot flashes in middle-aged men, especially when typical symptoms of hypogonadism are not reported.
