TLDR Hirsutism is common among Iraqi women, often without a known cause, but family history is significant.
This study conducted at Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital assessed hirsutism in 105 female patients aged 15 to 50 years over a one-year period. The majority of patients (57%) were between 20 and 30 years old. The average Ferriman-Gallwey score was 10.53±7.19. Associated signs of hyperandrogenism included acne (17.85%), menstrual irregularities (23.8%), androgenic alopecia (21%), and acanthosis nigricans (9.45%). Polycystic ovaries were found in 31.4% of patients, with 14.28% having elevated serum testosterone levels. A family history of hirsutism was noted in 33.3% of cases. The study concluded that hirsutism is a prevalent cosmetic issue among Iraqi women, primarily idiopathic, with familial cases also significant.
