TLDR Combining modern and Unani treatments may offer better care for hirsutism in PCOS.
This integrative review examines the pathophysiology and management of hirsutism in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) from both modern biomedical and Unani perspectives. In modern medicine, hirsutism is linked to hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, and altered ovarian steroidogenesis, leading to increased androgen levels and hair growth. Unani medicine attributes these symptoms to deranged Mizaj, accumulation of morbid humors, and menstrual disturbances. Conventional treatments include lifestyle changes, oral contraceptives, and anti-androgens, while Unani approaches focus on regimenal therapies and herbal formulations. The review suggests an integrative approach combining both therapies for holistic care and calls for future research on clinical trials and standardization of Unani protocols.
