TLDR Deer antler extract may boost hair growth by increasing IGF-I expression.
The study investigated the effects of red deer antlers on hair growth using a full-thickness wound healing model in Sprague-Dawley rats. Over 40 days, deer antler was applied to incision wounds, and results showed that by days 16, 32, and 40, there was longer and more active new hair growth around the healing wounds in antler-treated skin. Histological analysis revealed an increase in the depth, size, and number of hair follicles. The expression of IGF-I mRNA was significantly up-regulated in antler-treated skins, as confirmed by RT-PCR and ELISA analysis. These findings suggested that deer antler extract could enhance hair growth by promoting IGF-I expression and might be useful in hair growth products.
