TLDR Avicennia marina extract can significantly promote hair growth in androgenic alopecia patients.
The study investigated the effects of Avicennia marina (AM) extract and its active component, avicequinone C (AC), on hair growth in androgenic alopecia (AGA) patients. The research demonstrated that AM and AC significantly inhibited the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase, which is involved in hair loss, by 92.46% and 75.34%, respectively. This inhibition led to increased expression of growth factors like HGF, KGF, and VEGF, promoting hair growth in the anagen phase. Additionally, AM and AC suppressed apoptosis pathways, delaying the catagen phase, and reduced BMP-4, further stimulating hair growth. Clinical testing on 47 subjects showed that a formulation containing 0.1% AM extract significantly increased hair growth over 4 months without causing irritation. These findings supported the potential of AM extract as a treatment for AGA.
