Hearing Threshold Abnormalities in Patients with Alopecia Areata

Maha Adel Shaheen, Mary Matta, Tayseer Taha Abdel Rahman, Nancy Refaat
TLDR Alopecia areata patients may have hearing loss linked to the condition's severity and duration.
The study investigated the potential link between alopecia areata (AA) and hearing loss by examining 40 Egyptian participants, including 20 AA patients and 20 controls. It found a significant presence of sensorineural hearing loss in AA patients compared to controls. This hearing loss was directly correlated with the severity, duration, and recurrence of AA attacks, suggesting that the autoimmune process affecting melanocytes in AA might also impact hearing function.
