TLDR Certain hair styling methods, like weaving and straightening, are a main cause of hair loss in women from Bamako.
The study conducted in Bamako, Mali, from February 2018 to February 2019, involved 102 women aged 15 to 45 who had alopecia, out of a total of 7223 women, indicating a prevalence of 1.41%. The research found that common hairdressing practices such as weaving (97.06%), straightening (53.92%), and additions (72.54%) were associated with hair loss, with 33.33% of those who straightened their hair experiencing traumatic alopecia. The use of potash in straightening was noted in 72.54% of cases. The study concluded that styling practices were a major cause of alopecia, particularly traumatic alopecia, and recommended a case-control study to further investigate the risk factors.
