Indriyanti P. Ekawati, Vikha Ananda, Rusman Awaluddin
TLDR A 15% pea extract hair tonic effectively promotes hair growth and combats hair loss.
The study investigated the effectiveness of hair tonic formulations containing pea (Pisum sativum L.) extract in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss. The research tested different concentrations of the extract (5%, 10%, 15%) against a normal control and a positive control (Minoxidil 2%). The results showed that the 15% pea extract concentration had the best hair growth activity, with hair growth measuring 18.14 mm. The most effective hair tonic formulation was also the one with 15% extract, resulting in 14.51 mm hair growth and a hair weight of 0.16 g.

Alcohol-based minoxidil absorbs better but can cause irritation; non-alcohol-based is gentler. Topical dutasteride shows promise but needs more research; low-dose oral minoxidil (0.25 mg/day) is effective with fewer side effects. Ingredients like Procapil, Redensyl, caffeine, and Anagain in shampoos have limited evidence; ketoconazole shampoo can help when used 2-3 times a week with other treatments.
