TLDR Crataegus pinnatifida extract may help increase hair growth and thickness in mice.
The study from 2012 examined the effects of Crataegus pinnatifida extract on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice. The extract was orally administered at 50 mg/kg to mice in the telogen phase, and results indicated that it induced the anagen phase, increased hair shaft thickness, hair density, and the number and size of hair follicles. The ratio of anagen to telogen phase hair follicles also increased. Furthermore, the extract was found to promote the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells by activating certain signaling pathways and increasing the cell survival ratio of Bcl-2/Bax. After 12 days of treatment, hair density in the treated group increased by 50% compared to the control, and the anagen/telogen ratio was higher in the treated group. The study concluded that Crataegus pinnatifida extract could potentially promote hair growth and delay the catagen phase.
