TLDR Medical associations need to create more resources to improve healthcare for incarcerated individuals.
The analysis highlights the scarcity of educational resources and clinical guidance from medical associations regarding the healthcare of incarcerated individuals in the U.S., despite the high incarceration rate and the vulnerability of this population. Out of 116 associations reviewed, only 16 had published relevant materials, resulting in 44 documents that primarily focused on education, clinical and logistical guidance, and policy advocacy. The lack of comprehensive guidance can lead to inconsistent healthcare practices, underscoring the need for medical associations to develop resources that uphold the autonomy and dignity of incarcerated patients.
