TLDR Modifying grooming techniques and using treatments like chemical depilatories or laser hair removal can help manage Pseudofolliculitis barbae.
This narrative review examines the management of Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), a condition affecting individuals with curly or coarse hair, particularly Black men. It emphasizes that while discontinuing shaving is the most effective treatment, it is often impractical. For those who must shave, modifying grooming techniques, such as using electric razors, preshaving hydration, and postshaving care with glycolic or salicylic acid, can help reduce PFB. Chemical depilatories and laser hair removal, especially with Nd:Yag lasers, are highlighted as effective treatments for reducing hair density and improving skin texture. A randomized control trial with Black men aged 18-66 demonstrated the benefits of chemical depilatories over shaving. The review stresses the need for culturally sensitive treatment strategies and education to manage PFB effectively, as well as increased awareness to combat stigma and discrimination in workplaces with clean-shaven policies. Further research is needed to understand the impact of shaving frequency, direction, and razor type on PFB.
