TLDR Some gonadal hormone drugs can block filovirus entry into cells.
The study aimed to identify filovirus entry inhibitors from a library of 1,600 commercial drugs using a ZEBOV-GP/HIV pseudovirus model. It found 12 gonadal hormone drugs with inhibitory effects at a concentration of 10 μmol/L. Notably, toremifene citrate, tamoxifen citrate, and clomiphene citrate showed strong activity with IC50 values below 1 μmol/L. Additionally, these drugs, along with raloxifene hydrochloride and quinestrol, were effective against both Sudan ebola virus and Marburg virus pseudotypes. This research highlighted the potential of certain gonadal hormone drugs as inhibitors of filovirus entry in vitro.
