TLDR GLP-1 receptor agonists may cause hair loss, but regrowth is rare.
This systematic review investigates the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on hair loss and regrowth, analyzing 10 studies with a total of 920,890 adverse events and 382 patients in cohort studies. The review found a weak association between GLP-1RA use and hair loss, particularly with semaglutide and tirzepatide, but also noted cases of hair regrowth. Hair loss was reported in 1.6% of 626,894 patients, while hair regrowth was rare (0.008%). Mechanisms potentially linking GLP-1RA therapy to hair outcomes include hormonal changes, rapid weight loss, and nutritional deficiencies. The study highlights the need for larger cohort studies to better understand the relationship between GLP-1RAs and hair disorders, as causality cannot be inferred from the current data.
