GENOTYPE ? PHENOTYPE CORRELATIONS IN CUTANEOUS MELANOMA PATIENTS CARRIER OF THE MITF p.E318K PATHOGENIC VARIANT
TLDR MITF+ melanoma patients are more likely to have multiple melanomas and unique skin patterns.
The study investigated the association between the MITF p.E318K germline variant and clinical features in melanoma patients. It analyzed 984 cutaneous melanoma patients, including 22 MITF+ and 962 MITF- individuals. Findings indicated that MITF+ patients were more prone to developing dysplastic nevi and multiple primary melanomas, with a higher occurrence of nodular melanoma (32% in MITF+ vs. 19% in MITF-). Additionally, MITF+ patients exhibited melanomas with uncommon dermoscopic patterns, unlike the prevalent multicomponent pattern in MITF- patients. The study highlighted the need for targeted melanoma prevention and surveillance programs for MITF+ individuals.
