Genetic Analysis of Interleukin 18 Gene Polymorphisms in Alopecia Areata

    Sumeyya Deniz Celik, Ömer Ateş
TLDR Certain IL-18 gene variations may increase the risk of alopecia areata.
The study investigated the association of IL-18 gene polymorphisms (rs187238 and rs1946518) with alopecia areata (AA) in a Turkish population, including 200 patients and 200 controls. It found that the CC+CA genotypes and C allele of rs1946518, as well as the GG genotype and G allele of rs187238, were more frequent in AA patients. These IL-18 polymorphisms were linked to increased IL-18 production, suggesting a role in AA susceptibility. The study emphasized the need for further research on IL-18 in larger, diverse populations to better understand its role in AA.
