Gene Expression Analysis Reveals Novel Functions of Vitamin D and Glucocorticoids

This study utilized microarray technology to explore the effects of vitamin D and glucocorticoids on gene expression, revealing novel functions and pathways. In human fetal osteoblasts, vitamin D induced Cyr61, activating Notch and Hedgehog pathways involved in bone growth. In mice, glucocorticoid treatment increased insulin secretion and stress-related gene expression. Vitamin D receptor knockout (VDRKO) mice exhibited severe rickets, alopecia, and metabolic issues, with altered gene expression in kidneys and heart, indicating vitamin D's role in lipid metabolism and metabolic diseases. The study highlighted vitamin D's impact on the immune response and its connection to conditions like hypertension and diabetes, identifying new target genes and pathways.
