TLDR Researchers created a new mouse model, G4, that mimics human PCOS symptoms and links the condition to a specific gene.
In 2019, researchers introduced a new transgenic mouse model, G4, for studying polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age characterized by irregular menstrual periods, excess androgen, and polycystic ovaries. The G4 model exhibits obesity, glucose and insulin intolerance, sub-fertility, and increased bone mass, mimicking human PCOS symptoms. The gene disrupted in this model, Gm10800, is believed to be the mouse equivalent of the human gene PIRO, which may play a role in osteoclast formation. This discovery marks the first time a direct link between a gene and PCOS has been established, making the G4 model a valuable tool for understanding PCOS and testing new treatments, such as endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibitors.
