TLDR Fungal infections are common in severe COVID-19 cases but their impact on disease severity is unclear.
The study investigated the prevalence of opportunistic pathogenic fungal co-infections in critically ill COVID-19 patients and their potential role as risk factors for disease severity. It was found that these co-infections were indeed prevalent among this patient group. The presence of fungal co-infections was associated with increased disease severity, suggesting that they could be considered as risk factors. The study highlighted the importance of monitoring and managing fungal infections in critically ill COVID-19 patients to potentially improve outcomes.
