TLDR Alopecia areata is now understood to be driven by genetic and immune factors.
Alopecia areata, affecting over 146 million people globally, is an autoimmune disease causing hair loss. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), established in 1981, supports research, patient support, and public education. NAAF's biennial research summits, part of the Alopecia Areata Treatment Development Program, have significantly shifted the understanding of the disease from inflammatory and dermatological views to recognizing genetic and immunological factors as key drivers.
