TLDR Lichen planopilaris is rare, mostly affects older women, and is often linked to autoimmune diseases like lupus.
This study investigated the frequency and autoimmune associations of lichen planopilaris (LPP), a rare inflammatory disorder causing permanent hair loss. Analyzing data from 24,711 charts, 1,549 patients with LPP were identified, indicating a prevalence of 0.02581%. The majority of patients were females over 60 years old, with a significant portion also having autoimmune diseases. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was the most common autoimmune condition, affecting 55.55% of those with concurrent autoimmune diseases. The findings underscore the importance of further research to enhance management strategies for LPP, particularly in patients with autoimmune conditions.
