TLDR Finasteride may protect brain and improve behavior in rats with liver failure.
The study investigated the effects of finasteride on the EEG spectral density in a rat model of thioacetamide-induced hepatic encephalopathy. The results showed that finasteride may have neuroprotective effects in thioacetamide-induced hepatic encephalopathy by preventing the development of hepatic coma and improving motor activity and exploratory behavior in TAA-treated rats. Increases in beta and alpha band voltage and proportion were also found after finasteride pretreatment. However, the interpretation of EEG findings after finasteride pretreatment may be confounded by the influence of etiology of liver failure on initial EEG changes.
