TLDR Finasteride before TURP reduces blood loss and improves early postoperative quality of life.
This document contains three studies related to the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The first study evaluated the long-term characteristics of patients with persistent lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) after a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and found that the need for pharmacological treatment after TURP is a predictive factor for reoperation. The second study found that short-term finasteride therapy for six weeks before TURP reduced intraoperative blood loss and improved quality of life in the early postoperative period. The third study evaluated the learning curve of photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) and found that 75 patients were necessary to reach the goal of 66 to 80% in terms of vaporisation time.
