TLDR Women with PCOS often have irregular periods, a higher chance of infertility and miscarriages, and may improve fertility with lifestyle changes and treatment.
The study conducted at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Kadapa, India, over a six-month period, screened 970 women and diagnosed 62 with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), yielding a prevalence rate of 6.39%. It was found that 95.1% of the women with PCOS had irregular menstrual cycles, 13.35% faced infertility, and 64.4% experienced miscarriages. The average BMI of the women with PCOS was 23.52 ± 3.82, and a sedentary lifestyle was common among them, which may exacerbate PCOS symptoms. Treatment often included hormonal therapy and metformin, with an emphasis on the importance of lifestyle changes to improve fertility outcomes. However, the study's small sample size and short duration limited the ability to assess long-term effects of lifestyle changes. The study was ethically approved and had no conflicts of interest or funding sources reported.
