TLDR Female pattern hair loss, common in women, can be treated with various methods like minoxidil, anti-androgen treatments, and light therapy, but early intervention and realistic expectations are crucial.
In 2014, İdil Ünal's paper "Female pattern hair loss" discussed Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), a common cause of hair loss in women characterized by a diffuse reduction in hair density. FPHL was seen in 12% of women around 30 years old and 30-40% of women aged 60-69. The paper noted that while FPHL was seen in women with hyperandrogenemia, it was not a requirement. Various treatment options were discussed, including minoxidil and anti-androgen treatments like cyproterone acetate, spironolactone, finasteride, dutasteride, and flutamide. Other treatments mentioned were prostaglandin analogs, ketoconazole shampoos, low-level light therapy, hair transplant surgery, and cell-mediated therapies. However, only a 2% minoxidil solution was FDA-approved at the time. The paper emphasized the importance of realistic expectations and early intervention in treatment.
