TLDR Most people in the surveyed area experience hair loss, but they are not aware of the role of diet, iron, hormones, genetics, and possibly water quality in causing it.
In a survey of 380 participants from Delhi and the National Capital Region of India, conducted between June and September 2018, it was found that 96.5% experienced hair loss, with a significant number of young people affected (35.69% aged 10-20 years and 48.77% aged 20-30 years). The study revealed a lack of awareness about the role of diet, iron, hormones, and genetics in hair loss, with 94%, 77.65%, 89.92%, and 93.19% of participants respectively unaware of these factors. High levels of minerals in water used for hair washing were also identified as a potential cause of hair loss, although only 27.25% of subjects used water with TDS levels above 500 ppm, and the study could not confirm the impact of TDS on hair loss. Additionally, a high prevalence of 'sensitive scalp syndrome' was noted, which could be attributed to air pollution. Despite the widespread issue, only 14.44% sought medical advice. The study emphasized the need for increased awareness about the various factors that contribute to hair loss.
