TLDR Dermoscopy helps dermatologists diagnose different types of hair loss accurately without always needing a biopsy.
The review article by Antonella Tosti and Bruna Duque-Estrada from 11 years ago discussed the use of dermoscopy in diagnosing various types of alopecia, such as alopecia areata, trichotillomania, androgenetic alopecia, lichen planopilaris, and discoid lupus erythematosus of the scalp. The authors highlighted the non-invasive nature of dermoscopy for examining vascular patterns, follicular signs, and hair shaft characteristics, which improves diagnostic accuracy and understanding of pathogenesis. They noted specific dermoscopic findings associated with each condition, such as yellow dots for alopecia areata and hair diameter diversity for androgenetic alopecia. The conclusion was that dermoscopy is a valuable tool for dermatologists in the initial evaluation of hair loss, reducing the need for biopsies and helping to select biopsy sites when necessary, as well as monitoring patients over time.
