TLDR Eyelash extensions can cause eye problems like itching, redness, and heavy eyelids.
This study involving 400 female undergraduate students at the University of Benin found a significant relationship between the usage of eyelash extensions and ocular side effects. While only 16% of participants experienced side effects before using extensions, 54% reported issues during or after use. Common side effects included itching (38%), lashes pulling out (36%), heavy eyelids (34%), and red eyes (34%). The study highlighted statistically significant correlations between usage patterns and side effects such as pain, itching, tearing, and burning sensation, among others. The findings suggest that the growing trend of eyelash extensions poses potential visual health risks, warranting proper attention.
